The South West Coast Path is where so much of my work begins
Living and working in Cornwall, the South West Coast Path is interwoven into my life as an artist. It's where I go to think, to sketch, to let my mind wander, to feel the landscape all the way through. Itâs the stretch from Cape Cornwall to Zennor and onto St Ives that I love most. The drama of the cliffs, the sea in all its guises, calm one moment and full of fury the next, the joy of turning a corner and discovering a hidden cove you didn't know was there. Magical!
There's a particular walk along the path on high cliffs towards the Gurnards Head where you can hear the sea before you can see it, an enclosed stretch that suddenly opens out to an imposing granite ridge soaring up from the Atlantic. In the shadow of Bosigran ridge (200m) is Porthmoina a small hidden cove with an untouched beach, nobody there but a lone gull drifting on the wind.
Moments like that are where my heart leaps and my paintings begin.
And itâs this experience on the path at Bosigran that led to the painting on the cover of David Mankin Language of Paint. âQuiet the beach liesâ, 160 x 160cm painted in 2023.
I've wanted to do something to support the path for a while now, and this print is that. A limited fine art edition, made in Cornwall, with every penny of profit going to the South West Coast Path charity that keeps this iconic and much loved 630 mile trail maintained, improved and open for all to enjoy.
This is the cove that inspired Quiet The Beach Lies. I sat above it for a long while, just watching the light change on the water and the way the swell moved against the rocks. Bosigran Ridge sits across the bay, and it's a spot I return to often, on foot, along the coast path.

ABOUT THE CHARITY
The South West Coast Path Charity looks after the 630 mile trail that runs the length of the south west coastline, keeping it open, signed and cared for. It costs £1,700 per mile every year to maintain. All proceeds from this print, after costs, go directly to their work.
The South West Coast Path has been named one of the world's greatest walks by Lonely Planet, included in National Geographic's 100 Hikes of a Lifetime, and voted Britain's Best Walk twice by readers of Walk magazine.
