Between the
Coastline and the Canvas
Original abstract landscapes, shaped by walking the Cornish coast
Abstract Expressionist Painter
Meet David Mankin
David Mankin is a renowned British painter known for his compelling abstractions of the landscape. His paintings explore form, colour and surface, drawing on a deep well of mark-making techniques and painterly expression embodying risk and change. Cornwall is his source, an ancient, wild landscape surrounded by sea and carved out by the perpetual flux of the elements.
Walking and immersing himself in the landscape is where his process begins. Thoughts unravel amongst the beauty of nature unlocking memories, feelings, emotions. Sensory pauses. Interludes. Spaces where connections are made charged with the rhythms, textures and moods of the coast.
His work evokes the transient nature of the boundary between land and sea. Fleeting glimpses between storms, shifting light conditions, the quiet before the next wave.
These works do not seek to describe the Cornish landscape, but to feel it, to immerse the viewer in its elemental presence. Each piece become visual interlude - an abstraction of the landscape’s mood rather than its form.
A place for the viewer to pause, reflect, unearth meaning and memory.
“David Mankin is one of the most compelling
abstract painters of his generation...”
“...creating works of intensity and depth inspired by the Cornish landscape. His paintings carry an emotional weight and instil a visceral response - each painting evoking real feelings rather than a casual observation.
Through his unique language of paint, he captures the wilds of Cornwall, distilling its essence into something profoundly human. The resultant body of work forms a lasting connection in all who encounter it and I believe his standing in the art world will continue to soar amongst his many collectors around the world.”
